Former Indian pacer Varun Aaron has advised the Delhi Capitals (DC) management after the recent IPL 2025 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The former fast bowler stated that the team management should promote KL Rahul to the opening position in order to bring stability to their batting lineup.
KL Rahul has been a consistent batter for Delhi Capitals in their early IPL 2025 matches but has struggled to find form lately. Rahul scored just 10 runs off 14 balls during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday, May 5. DC posted a modest total of 133/7 before the rain stopped the match.
KL Rahul Will Solve All Your Batting Problems – Varun Aaron
Speaking on ESPN Cricinfo, Varun Aaron said that Rahul’s experience would provide much-needed consistency. Aaron also pointed out that moving Karun Nair up in the order has not been ideal.
“If you want stability in this batting line-up, send KL Rahul to open. He is going to solve all your problems. If they are going to play around with the openers, might as well put in the most experienced opener as an opener. If you put in Karun, I don’t think it is fair on him because they have really moved him up and down the order quite a lot,” Aaron said on ESPN Cricinfo.
Pick Players Best Suited to Their Roles – Varun Aaron
Varun Aaron further said that rather than changing the batting order, Delhi Capitals should focus on placing players in roles that suit them best. He highlighted that Rahul has been consistently moved up and down the order in other teams.
“If you are making radical changes a lot, put in the guys who are most suited to their role, and who have taken the pressure. We all know how much KL Rahul is moved up and down the order in other teams,” Aaron added.
Delhi Capitals, led by Axar Patel, suffered another early collapse with the bat, slumping to 15 for 3 during the powerplay at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
Delhi Capitals’ Top-Order Troubles Persist in Ongoing IPL 2025 Season
Delhi Capitals have struggled to find a stable opening pair throughout IPL 2025. They started with Jake Fraser-McGurk and Faf du Plessis. However, they had to reconsider after Fraser-McGurk’s form dipped and du Plessis picked up an injury.
Abishek Porel and Karun Nair tried their hand at the top while KL Rahul was moved to No. 3. Even after du Plessis returned, the experimentation continued — most recently against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where Nair opened and Porel came in at one-down.
As an opener, KL Rahul played a 77-run knock off 51 balls against Chennai Super Kings, helping DC to a 25-run win at Chepauk. He began his IPL journey in the middle order, but has settled as an opener since 2018. He has amassed 4260 runs in 100 innings at an average of 48.97 and a strike rate of 137.15.
