Form is temporary, class is permanent; it is a common adage in cricket vocabulary. Often, the greatest players of their time have stood up when the chips were down. Rohit Sharma himself has done it time and again over his career.

But now 37, nearing the end of his career, the Hit-Man has so far lived a charmed life in IPL 2025. Just a little over a month after leading India to another ICC title, Rohit has contributed close to nothing to his team’s cause. Mumbai Indians have struggled so far this season, and Rohit is at the forefront of what is going wrong for the five-time champions.

Rohit Sharma in IPL 2025: No runs, more money?

Rohit Sharma’s future with Mumbai Indians was a huge talking point last season after the franchise replaced him as captain. However, the five-time champions eventually retained him for Rs 16.30 crore. It his highest paycheck in the 18 seasons of IPL cricket, putting a sizeable hole in MI’s auction budget.

The retention, however hasn’t worked out so far for the Mumbai Indians. Rohit has failed to make a sizeable contribution in either of his four matches, with MI needing their middle order to rescue.

Not once has Rohit managed to bat through the powerplay, and his failures have compounded matters for the franchise. To put it simply, Rohit has earned close to Rs 43 lakh for each run he has scored in IPL 2025. He has spent 34 minutes at the batting crease, earning a mind-boggling Rs 48 lakh per minute.

An odd fit in MI plans

Rohit Sharma’s struggles in the IPL are not something unheard of. The former MI captain has scored more than 400 runs only once in the last 6 seasons. While he did not set the Orange Cap leaderboard, the Hit-man offered invaluable leadership input, which the 37-year-old can simply point to his 5 IPL titles to prove.

However, since Hardik is now the MI captain, Rohit finds himself as an odd fit in his dynasty. While the current MI captain still values Rohit’s inputs, the latter spends little to no time in the middle.

Rohit missed the game against Lucknow Super Giants due to an injury. He has been the impact substitute in three of his four games, being off the field while the team is bowling.

While the move could be aimed at keeping Rohit fresh when he walks out to bat, it has so far been counter-productive to say the least. With MI having just 1 win in 5 games, questions need to be raised on Rohit’s fit in the team’s plan to turn this slump around.

Can Rohit Sharma turn it around? Yes. Will he? Time will tell. Can MI carry a Rs 16.30 crore liability? No. Will they? Again, only time will tell. Do MI have time on their hands? No.
