Sunil Gavaskar has thrown his weight behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to lift the Indian Premier League 2025 trophy. In an exclusive conversation with India Today, the former India captain hailed RCB’s balanced squad and clinical performances, stating they are “definitely the title favourites” this season.

RCB to win IPL 2025?

The Red and Gold Brigade has been quite fantastic this season. Under the leadership of Rajat Patidar, RCB became the first team to win seven matches at IPL 2025. If they win their match tonight (May 3) against rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK), RCB will go top of the IPL 2025 points table.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru. They’ve batted well and fielded superbly too. Mumbai Indians are close, but they’ve only just started their surge. The question is whether they can maintain it, as they have three tough matches coming up against top teams. How they carry that momentum will be key. But yes, RCB are definitely the title favourites,” Gavaskar said.

RCB are on a roll, sitting second on the table with seven wins in ten matches. What’s even more impressive is their unbeaten record in away matches, with them dominating on the road. According to Gavaskar, the Mumbai Indians (MI) are the only team that could potentially give RCB a run for their money. However, even MI got their season off to a rocky start, whereas RCB have been consistently superb.

RCB’s cohesion stands out in IPL 2025

Under new captain Rajat Patidar, RCB have emerged as one of the most cohesive and tactically astute sides in IPL 2025. This is no longer a team dependent on one or two superstars. Instead, they’ve functioned like a well-oiled unit with multiple match-winners stepping up across different games.

In fact, five different players have bagged Player of the Match awards in their seven victories—something that Sanjay Manjrekar also alluded to. While the likes of Josh Hazlewood, Krunal Pandya, and Virat Kohli have starred, important contributions from Tim David, Devdutt Padikkal, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have brought stability.

RCB’s qualification scenario is straightforward—one more win from their remaining four matches will all but seal a playoff spot. But with three of those games at home, where they’ve struggled, the next fortnight remains critical.
