CSK Captain MS Dhoni has dropped a massive hint on his future in IPL after beating KKR in the recent IPL 2025 match at Eden Gardens. Dhoni, now 43, was appointed Chennai Super Kings’ captain mid-season after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of IPL 2025.
Dhoni will be turning 44 in July this year, and despite that, the 5-time IPL champion doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. MS Dhoni is still among the fastest wicketkeepers currently playing in the IPL.
MS Dhoni’s keeping is still top-notch
Although Dhoni’s keeping and captaincy have been top-notch, his batting form has seen a dip in IPL 2025. The constant change in position in the batting order also hasn’t helped the CSK captain ascertain his role in the side batting-wise.
Chennai Super Kings’ batters have been extremely inconsistent throughout IPL 2025, and that has been the biggest reason behind CSK’s dismal result this year.
They are already out of the tournament after having won just 3 matches out of the 12 games that they have played.
Chepauk breached in IPL 2025
The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, which used to be CSK’s fortress for years now has also been breached on multiple occasions by teams visiting. Many teams have won in Chepauk for the 1st time in a decade, whereas, SRH went on to win their 1st IPL match in history in Chepauk this year.
Amidst all this, regular fluctuations in the playing 11 and batting order haven’t left even MS Dhoni unmarked. MS Dhoni has failed to meet the expectations with the bat on a lot of occasions in IPL 2025, which has led to fans questioning his place in the side, too.
What MS Dhoni’s future holds is a decision not known to many. Even CSK CEO Kasi Viswannathan was recently asked about the veteran’s plans for IPL 2026, and like ever before, Kasi said that they will leave the decision to Dhoni, and till now, he hasn’t informed the franchise of anything.
Dhoni, however, has been asked directly or indirectly about his IPL future with CSK on a couple of occasions in IPL 2025. Danny Morrison asked Dhoni at the toss during CSK vs PBKS about the burning question, and Dhoni was quick to dodge it by stating that he isn’t sure of his future for the next game, let alone the next season.
Once again, after the KKR vs CSK match at Eden Gardens, MS Dhoni was asked about the fans’ support everywhere he goes and even when CSK play away from home.
Shedding light a bit on his future, Dhoni said, “That’s the love and affection I have got throughout, not to forget, I’m 43 and I have played for a long time. They don’t know when it will be my last year, it is a fact that I play only 2 months a year.”
“This IPL gets over, then I have to work to see if my body is able to take this kind of pressure. (on his retirement plans) Nothing to decide as of now, but the love and affection I get everywhere is excellent,” MS Dhoni added.
Chennai is recovering from initial bumps
It will be interesting to see whether Dhoni can continue with the same vigour as before, as and when we reach close to the next edition of IPL. Ruturaj Gaikwad should be back as the CSK captain if any new injury doesn’t bother him throughout the course of this year.
Urvil Patel’s addition also boosts CSK’s wicketkeeping options, and if need be, CSK could be ready to go ahead even without Dhoni in IPL 2026. However, if that happens, it will be exciting to see how the Wave of Yellow flocks to away venues.
