The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking to resume the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire. Kolkata Knight Riders‘ (KKR) pacer Umran Malik won’t return to his home state of Jammu and Kashmir due to the current state of affairs. Foreign stars like Tom Curran and Daryl Mitchell were fearing for their lives in Pakistan, having signed deals to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025.
In non-IPL news, Virat Kohli has allegedly decided to retire from Test cricket. This has hurt BCCI, who were thinking about naming him India’s interim captain for the England Test series. The new skipper, who’ll replace Rohit Sharma, will be announced in 2 weeks.
IPL 2025 to restart soon?
The IPL 2025 season may resume by May 16. Hours after India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire on May 10, the news of the tournament starting exactly a week after it was halted started to emerge. Barring Dharamshala, the BCCI is looking to have matches at every venue. However, the news of Pakistan violating the ceasefire doesn’t inspire much confidence.
Virat Kohli to retire from Tests?
Virat Kohli has allegedly informed the BCCI that he wishes to retire from Test cricket. The news came as a shock to everyone early in the morning. The board is trying to convince the former Indian captain to at least continue until the England Test series. Players like Brian Lara and Ambati Rayudu have also urged Kohli to keep on playing red-ball cricket.
New India Test captain by May 23
The BCCI will hold a press conference on May 23 and announce India’s squad for the England Test series. But that won’t be it. The board will also name the player who’ll replace Rohit Sharma as India’s Test captain. Earlier, the BCCI had stated they’ll name the team by May 20, but Kohli’s sudden retirement news may have forced them to change the date.

BCCI wanted Kohli to become India captain again
When Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, the BCCI wanted Kohli to take over as India’s interim Test captain. They planned to hand the leadership to Shubman Gill but wanted to groom him for longer. But Kohli has announced that he’s retiring. Now, BCCI is left with no choice but to make Gill the skipper for the England Test series.
Don’t return to Jammu & Kashmir, Umran Malik’s family tells him
Umran Malik’s family has told him to stay back in Hyderabad. The KKR fast bowler was about to join Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 18, but due to the IPL 2025 being halted, he, like other players, was told that he could return home. However, his family doesn’t want that. Since Jammu & Kashmir, his birthplace, is under constant threat due to tensions between India and Pakistan, Umran’s family has told him not to return home.
“Would never return to Pakistan,” says stuck PSL player
Foreign cricketers in India were worried about their safety as an IPL 2025 match was cancelled in Dharamshala. Luckily, they are on their way home, and that too without any problem. But the same can’t be said for players playing in PSL 2025. Stuck at an airport which was later destroyed in crossfire between India and Pakistan, Tom Curran was crying as he feared for his life while Daryl Mitchell vowed that he wouldn’t return to Pakistan again.
