Team India opener Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket and dropped a big hint about his future plans in international cricket. The opener, who retired from T20Is after guiding the team to victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, has shifted his attention to winning the ODI World Cup 2027.

Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, during the ongoing IPL season. The 38-year-old shared the news on Instagram and clarified that he would continue to be available for One Day Internationals (ODIs). He will now be seen playing only in the 50-over format for Team India.

In a conversation with journalist Vimal Kumar, Rohit opened up about the loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. India dominated with an unbeaten run throughout the tournament, but they were unable to clinch the title, falling to Australia in the final.

With his retirements from T20Is and Test cricket, Rohit revealed that his next big ambition is to compete in the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Rohit admitted that lifting the ODI trophy is still very much on his mind.

“Zehem mein bilkul hai (on playing ODI World Cup 2027). Bilkul [It’s definitely on my mind. Absolutely],” Rohit said.

“Acha rahega agar aisa hua to (on adding the ODI World Cup to his cabinet) [It would be great if that happens],” he added.

Rohit Sharma Has Won Four ICC Trophies in His Illustrious Career

Rohit Sharma has won four ICC trophies—two T20 World Cups (2007 and 2024) and the Champions Trophy twice (2013 and 2025). Notably, two of those titles came under his captaincy. However, the dream of lifting the ICC World Test Championship will remain incomplete, despite reaching the final in 2023.

Rohit Sharma is currently playing for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 season. He has been a consistent performer this season. Sharma has scored 300 runs in 11 matches at an average of 30.00 and a strong strike rate of 152.28, including three half-centuries.

He is set to return to action when MI face Punjab Kings on Sunday, May 11. After a shaky start to their season, Mumbai have bounced back impressively. They are in fourth place in the standings with 14 points from 12 games. They need to win at least one more match to stay in the race for the IPL 2025 playoffs.
